Open Question: How can I better understand insurance?

I just started a job at an insurance office as a receptionist/ extra jobs need to be done person. (lol) I am trying to understand more about it but i am still a little confused. Maybe if i understood how it works i would be able to understand how their programs work and be able to work on them with out also having to understand insurance too... help please.
