Emmy Awards: Who deserves to win and predictions

It really is good to be king, but as far as the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards are concerned, we only get to be that until the actual show begins on Sunday night and we're sitting in our living rooms wondering if the whole world has gone crazy.

Yes, some of us may still be scratching our heads that some actors and shows were nominated, but other worthy contenders were kicked to the curb. But now it's time to move on and play the game of handicapping the show itself.

Deciding who you'd want to win is actually the easy part, in general. Yes, there are really difficult categories, such as supporting actor in a drama, in which Peter Dinklage's performance in "Game of Thrones" stands out. But I promise you, I for one will not shed a tear if the award goes to either John Slattery of "Mad Men," Walton Goggins of "Justified" or Andre Braugher of the late and very lamented "Men of a Certain Age." Josh Charles of "The Good Wife" is a decent candidate if the television academy wants to reward a solid actor who's done very good work in several series. And while Alan Cumming is great at almost everything he does, his "Good Wife" role doesn't really feel like an award winner.

That's the kind of endless mind game you can get into the minute you start to try to second-guess the Emmys. You can say, well, Steve Carell is gone from "The Office" and "Friday Night Lights" is gone from the schedule, so why would the academy bother? Then again, you might conclude that it's exactly for those reasons that Carell and "FNL" could be sentimental favorites this year. Really, it's all crazy-making.

And that's exactly what it can be now. Here's a list of nominees in the major categories. The list includes my choices as well as my predictions on who's likely to go home with the trophy on Sunday night. And of course, I stand firmly by my predictions until the moment I'm proved horrifically wrong. And if Dinklage and Margo Martindale (Mags Bennett in "Justified") don't win, there's no justice in the world.
