Eleanor Mondale Dead At 51

Eleanor Mondale, daughter of former US Vice President Walter Mondale, died early Saturday at age 51, her family confirmed.

Mondale had been battling brain cancer since 2005.

"Our wonderful daughter, Eleanor Mondale Poling, after her long and gutsy battle against cancer, went up to heaven last night to be with her angel," her parents, Walter and Joan Mondale, said in a statement.

Eleanor Mondale began her career as a reporter for WCCO-TV in Minneapolis in the 1980s, and went on to work as a host for cable networks E! and ESPN before returning to WCCO to host a midday radio show "Mondale and Jones."

She was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005 after suffering seizures. Her cancer was in remission in 2006, then returned in 2008 and 2009.

Her father, Walter Mondale, served as Jimmy Carter's vice president from 1977 to 1981 before running for the presidency as the Democratic candidate in 1984. He was defeated by Ronald Reagan in a landslide, managing to win only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia in the most lopsided presidential contest in US history.

Eleanor Mondale is survived by her parents, her brothers William Mondale and former Sen. Ted Mondale (D-Minn.), and her husband, musician Chan Poling.

In a statement Saturday, Poling said his wife "lived bravely, without regret or fear, with such amazing strength and grace, for six years after being diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005."

"She was a great inspiration to many. Through her we learned to live like her, for the moment, with a full and loving heart. We will miss her unique, beautiful, strong soul," he said.
