Avignon: Five members of a family poisoned during a dinner

Five members of one family were hospitalized after taking a meal Thursday night. They were placed under general anesthesia and airway management, having been victims of a "neuro-food poisoning." The prognosis is engaged to one of them. Indeed, the grandmother is now between life and death. According to doctors, four others are in a "severe".

The services of the hospital of Avignon, where the family was admitted, suspect a toxin "botulinum" to be the cause of the poisoning.

Botulism is a rare neuro-intoxication causing a non-contagious twenty cases each year in France. Serious but uncommon, it can lead to death by respiratory paralysis. It is growing especially in canning that are consumed after the expiry date.

A survey was conducted by the prefecture in connection with the Regional Health Agency and some of the food consumed, may be the cause of intoxication, were taken.
Two crafts involved

The prefecture and the Regional Health Agency launched an investigation to determine the origin of the intoxication. "Pending the results and as a precaution it is advisable to suspend use of the products from these two lots," said the prefecture.

A green almond tapenade (180 g pot-lot No. 112005) and a spread-dried tomatoes (180g pot - lot No. 112607) from optimal use by date 16/12/12, brand Delights Marie Claire, are analyzed. "This is a hypothesis, not to take the risk of other people eating. It is undesirable to blame if this craftsman is ultimately nothing to do with intoxication, "said Martine Clavel, secretary general of the prefecture of Vaucluse.

Thirty such cases were found last year, causing the death of a person.
