Open Question: question about penstion plan at work?

I have a friend who's dad died about a year ago. He worked at the same place for over 40 years. He did have a pension plan. Since he was not married, will his survivng children get his pension plan? I've read that sometimes if there is no spouse, the children are not entitled to it.
