Open Question: If I am currently under my father's car insurance plan, could I sign up for my own without his consent?

I want my own car insurance and I don't believe my father will cancel my plan with him in order for me to do it. My plan would be to sign up for my own car insurance and then discontinue paying my father until he agrees to take me off his insurance.
