The annual MDA Labor Day telethon went on last night without Jerry Lewis as host. All the proceeds are going to Lewis' favorite Muscular Dystrophy charity as the "Jerry Lewis Award."Neither MDA nor Lewis have commented directly on his firing.
A Labor Day ritual, The Muscular Dystrophy telethon goes on the air Sunday night. However, for the first time in 45-years, Jerry Lewis will be a no show. At the famed Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, comedians upset at Jerry's ouster are planning their own Labor Day fundraiser as a tribute to the legend.
The telethon raised nearly $61.5 million Sunday, an increase of about $2.6 million over last year, MDA officials said. An orchestra was ready to film Lewis, but he didn't come to the Las Vegas casino where the telethon was filmed, Lythgoe said. Lewis publicist Candi Cazau declined comment when reached by the AP.
