India, Nepal hit by 6.9 earthquake; 9 dead

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 struck northeast India and portions of Nepal Sunday night, leaving nine dead and a number of buildings damaged, news accounts said.

Associated Press reported that the temblor shook India’s capital of New Delhi and killed four in India’s Sikkim state. Nepalese government officials said five people were killed there and dozens injured by the quake.

AP said the quake was followed by two aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.1 and 5.3. The epicenter was reported to be 42 miles northwest of the Sikkim capital of Gangtok, AP said. Local stations said buildings collapsed and sidewalks cracked in the capital.

Sikkim officials said the sparsely populated region includes a number of areas cut off by mudslides, so the full extent of damage is unknown, AP reported.
