In the interview, Morris, who has previously credited her upstairs assets to “good bras” stated that the implants where “something I thought I wanted when I was younger, and now I don’t,” noting that it was “hard being active with them,” due to the chronic pain they caused.
Exactly how young was she when she got them is hard to say; Morris has remained tight-lipped about when she actually got the implants done, though she had not yet had the surgery when she was 18 on So You Think You Can Dance, but had had it done by the time she was 21 and dancing back-up for Beyoncé.
Despite the changes to her body, Morris has managed to avoid the initial did-she-or-didn’t-she debate (she was relatively unknown before being cast on Glee in 2009)–which makes her open admission a refreshing bit of honesty in the discussion about stars and surgery. But it does still bring up questions about how young is too young to make such a serious decision–and what young celebrities are still being told about how their bodies should look.
For a young woman whose body and ability to move it is essentially her job, it’s not surprising that the pressure to look ideal weighed heavy on Morris, who has been dancing her whole life, and has always intended to make a career of it. What’s more upsetting, though, is that someone who’s as talented a dancer as she is felt the need to go under the knife to be a professional–a message that trickles down to young media consumers.
Teens, by the way, still request breast implants more than almost any other surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is in spite of that fact that several varieties of breast implants, including those using silicon gel, are banned by the FDA for women under the age of 22.
However, Morris’s decision to remove the implants (and candor about doing so) sends a clear message to the teens who may watch and admire her on Glee: surgery at a young age may not be the solution. It’s also great to see that she’s still a valued and talented member of the popular show’s cast, with or without the implants.
